Superhero Cupcakes!

These cupcakes were for one of my most frequent customers. She always gives me something fun to do! For her father-in-law I did Beatles cupcakes, which are still my favorites. Anyway, I loved making the logos and think they turned out so fun. The cupcakes were half chocolate and half vanilla and both were topped with delicious cream cheese frosting.

Oh! And Jessicakes is officially baking for Cupcake Camp Dallas! Mark it down on your calendar to come. You won't want to miss it!

Vroom-Vroom

Last week was so fun. I got to make some crazy and different cakes including this little NASCAR gem. In case you are not familiar with the racing world, this is Jeff Gordon's car. I had to do my fair share of research about the car, but I think it turned out great.
It did make me want to watch Talladega Nights really bad and that's about the only NASCAR I can take. ;)

My kind of breakfast...

A couple of weeks ago I received sort of a strange request. A customer wanted a breakfast themed birthday cake for her daughter's 2nd birthday. Something unusual and fun. I immediately was excited because, well, I love a good challenge. I sketched a few designs and I was so happy when she chose my personal pick. The result was incredibly fun and is now one of my personal favorites!

Just in case it's hard to tell the base of the entire cake is a giant waffle. Then you've got doughnuts, cereal, a short stack of pancakes, and a piece of bacon & an egg.

I have to say that I was so pleased with how the pancakes turned out. I really wanted a cake airbrush machine for this project, but couldn't get it in time. I'm almost glad I didn't have it because it literally turned out just like my sketch!

I hope you loved this cake as much as I did. And hopefully if you've got a whacky cake idea out there you'll shoot it to me, the quirkier the better!

Happy Monday!

Rockin' Skateboard Cake

This cake was so fun to make and turned out rockin'! I loved the flames on the side and the 3-D skateboard on top.
This inside was vanilla on vanilla and the bright colors made it so fun. Hopefully CJ enjoyed this cake and his partygoers as well.

A Strawberry Dream Wedding Cake

Yes, I've done a wedding cake. Another one. I think that officially makes two. And one groom's cake. I feel pretty good after making this one too. Not only did it turn out beautiful, it was delicious too.
I used both fondant and buttercream to decorate this cake. I covered the cake in white fondant and then did all the piping in buttercream. I think it gave it a really clean and nice finish.
The flavor was just a simple white cake, but the filling is what made it. I used cream cheese frosting (per the bride's request) and strawberry preserves. Let me say it looked amazing...and I wish I could have had a piece....seriously it looked that tasty.

Thanks for stopping by,

Etsy Shop is now open!

I might be doing this a bit premature, since I only have three listings, BUT I really wanted to announce it anyway. Basically I will feature cake and cupcake stands along with fondant cupcake toppers.

If you are a great baker, but your decorations leave something to be desired, then you can order the toppers from me. Unfortunately, I haven't got those online yet. The cake stands I sell are handmade and unique. I especially love the cupcake and mini cupcake stands. They are adorable and I can see them looking great at a shower or wedding!

Please take the time to check out the shop, you can click here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/JessiCakesAndBakes or check out the separate page I've added to the blog, just look in the left hand column where "flavors/prices" are located. Please spread the word about the shop, especially tell those who don't live locally!

Thanks and happy Monday!

Snow Day inside ideas for you, the crazed parent!

This is the fourth day in a row you've been inside. You've baked everything you thought you could. You've done about a billion coloring pages. You've watched every decent video you own. Now what? Well first off, the snow finally arrived so there is the ability to actually go out and make a snowman and have a snow ball fight, but that could last an hour tops right? Jessicakes thought she'd help those in the North Texas who've been iced in to the point of going crazy. Here are a few ice/snow day inside ideas, that maybe you haven't thought of yet...
Put on a Show: Gather costumes, props, etc. Have each child write down a location, character names, and action, place them in separate bags. Have each child pull one slip from each bag. Then have the children write their own script based on those three things (help younger children write these things down). After the scripts are written, each child gets to direct their production. For added fun, video tape the performance and have a big “movie premiere”!

·      Colorful Cupcakes: If you have a box of vanilla or white cake mix on hand whip up a batch. Divide batter into several bowls. Dye each bowl a different color. Place spoons in each batter bowl. Allow children to use various colors to make rainbow cupcakes. Swirl with toothpicks to make a marble effect. Bake the cupcakes (keeping each child’s separate).  Ice the cupcakes with any frosting you like. Then allow children to decorate with sprinkles, candies, cereal, etc.

Brownie/Cookie Experiments: Any box or bag mix will do, but make the dough for brownies or cookies. Divide the batter between the participating children. Pull various extra ingredients from the pantry and refrigerator: chocolate chips, peanuts, candy, sprinkles, cereal, cherries, chocolate syrup, pickles, whatever. Then allow the children to create several new kinds of cookies or brownies (cookies work best because you can roll the ingredients in with the dough). Bake the cookies and let them cool a bit. Then break each cookie into enough pieces for everyone to try. Keep a record of who made it and what was in it. At the end let everyone vote for his or her favorite.

·      Board Games for Bored Kids: (This game works best for more than four people). Maybe you have made every puzzle or played every game you own, but there is a good chance you haven’t played them all at the same time. Pick at least four board games and divide the children (or teens or adults) into at least two teams. Have a member from each team sit at a board game (choose games that are familiar to everyone), not all board games need to be occupied. Have a buzzer or bell ready. When you start the round, each player gets a few minutes to play the game. Then when the buzzer sounds the players move to the next game and start to play that one, they play that game a few minutes, then the buzzer sounds and they go to the next one. You can decide how long to make each round as well as the length of the entire game. The point is to see which team goes further (or wins) the most out of every board game.  Here is an example with Team A and Team B:

                      A1                  A2
Trouble--Connect Four--Go Fish--Uno--(Back to start)
                                        B1                  B2

You can even throw a Wii or video game in there as well. The point is to get kids moving and keep things fast paced.

Snow Ice Cream:

Ingredients
          1 gallon snow
            1 cup white sugar
            1 tablespoon vanilla extract
            2 cups milk

Directions
When it starts to snow, place a large, clean bowl outside to collect the flakes or gather the snow from a safe-to-eat area. When full, stir in sugar and vanilla to taste, then stir in just enough milk for the desired consistency. Serve at once.

Other ideas:
  • Watch home videos, children love to see themselves on the television and teenagers loved to be embarrassed :)
  • Have children create their own board game and then get the family to play it.
  • Use this time to organize old photos. Let children help sort them by occasion. If you find a few extra repeat photos of pictures children like, let them create a scrapbook page or decorate an old photo frame.
  • Indoor hide and seek is always fun and change the rules up--make it where everyone has to crawl or jump to their hiding spot and for "it" to track people down.
  • Create a fort from chairs and blankets. Decorate it with hand drawn pictures and other items of the children's choosing.
  • Gather any craft items, newspaper, paints (washable), etc. and allow the children to create their own art. Each art work needs to be titled and then put on "display".

A Classy Cake

I love, love this cake. That's really all I can say. I love how it turned out and I loved the flavor combination inside, french vanilla cake with chocolate and fresh-cut strawberry filling.
The client sent me three different photos, all similar in style and trusted me to come up with best design. She liked the color red, so we used that as an accent color.
All the cutouts were done by hand and the pattern was created while pieces were being added. Overall, the cake was a success. The client said everyone at the party loved it and even the servers and the restaurant wanted to know who made it.

Hope your ice day is going well! If you're bored, leave me some comments!

To Infinity and Beyond!

I was delighted to make this cake for a client. When she emailed me and said "Toy Story"I was so excited and I knew it had to be something over the top. The cake was for a little boy turning "3". The client wanted something memorable.
I sculpted practically every character from the film and arranged them around the base of the bottom tier. The cake itself is chocolate with chocolate filling and fresh strawberries. I loved making it and hope the birthday boy truly enjoyed it!
